The Cabinet Secretary, Ministry of Water and Irrigation Hon. Eugene Wamalwa joined the Lake Victoria North Water Services Board led by the Chairman Hon. Joseph Lagat and CEO

Lake Victoria North Water Services Board has begun the construction works for the Ellegerini pipeline and expansion of Kapsoya Treatment works with a view to increasing water supply to the ever growing town of Eldoret. Currently the town suffers from deficit in water supply as the demand outstrips the available water supplied to the town per day. The town presently relies on the 28,000m3 from the Chabara treatment works in Moiben in Elgeyo Marakwet, some over 30 kilometers from Eldoret.

The Ellegerini pipeline extension and expansion of Kapsoya Treatment works is part of the works being implemented by Lake Victoria North Water Services Board  on behalf of the Ministry of Water and Irrigation in the Uasin Gishu County under the Water and Sanitation Services Improvement Programme-Additional Financing (WaSSIP-AF) funded by the World Bank funded and the Government of Kenya.
The construction works undertaken by the China Henan International Cooperation Group at a cost of over KShs. 625Million and supervised by Mangat IB Patel and Partners Consulting firm commenced on the 30th May 2016 and is expected to last for a period of 20 months up to 30th January 2018.

The scope of works in the project include a new intake, raw water gravity main, expansion of the treatment works in Kapsoya and Naiberi and expansion of the distribution network. Raw water will be tapped from the existing Ellegirini Dam by a new Raw Water Gravity Main through a 16.3km long, 400mm diameter pipeline up to the upgraded Kapsoya Treatment Works with an off-take for the new Naiberi Treatment Works. Kapsoya Treatment works will be done in two stages including the rehabilitation and expansion of Kapsoya Water Treatment Works which consist of different water treatment processes such as sedimentation where particles like sand are forced out of the water, treating the water using chlorine and reusing the filters in order to save energy and time.

Naiberi Water Treatment works which will be at Cherunya Market will be constructed to increase supply of water in the area and serve more people.  The water treatment works will include a chemical storage where control of health and physical hazards is contained, treating of water by mixing and dosing of chlorine, sedimentation and miscellaneous Building works including Operator’s office, Laboratory and store, staff houses and Guard house. The new service areas of Kipkorgot, Islamic Centre, Duka Moja and Naiberi Centre will have a water distribution network of 19.3km.

This project is set to effectively increase the water supply of Eldoret town by restoring the existing Kapsoya Treatment Works to its original design capacity and expand it to treat more water. There will be a Water Supply System for area upstream of the Kapsoya Treatment Works will be constructed under this Project with a new Naiberi Treatment Works at Cherunya Market which will serve a population of 14,215.
