Welcome to Lake Victoria North Water Services Board

Lake Victoria North Water Services Board (LVNWSB) is one of the eight Water Services Boards established under the Water Act 2002 section 51(2), as part of the reforms in the water sector with the mandate of ensuring efficient and economical provision of water and sewerage services within their respective areas of jurisdiction. The Board was established in March 2004 vide gazette notice no. 1717.

The Board contracts, monitors and enforces agreements with Water Service Providers (WSPs), in accordance with regulations set by the Water Services Regulatory Board (WASREB).

Direct provision of water and sanitation services is however undertaken by Water Service Providers (WSPs) who are the Board’s agents. However, in the event that for either economic or social reasons it is not possible to establish a WSP, the Board is mandated to undertake service provision.

Moi’s Bridge –Matunda Water Supply System is in one of the flagship projects the Board had planned to rehabilitate under the Kenya’s Vision 2030 flagship projects during the year 2015.The rehabilitation works which are expected to take three months is expected to increase capacity and supply to the urban center and the adjoining peri-urban areas upon its completion. Already the tender for the works have been awarded and the contractor has already moved to site for the works. The scope of the rehabilitation exercise include refurbishment of the Intake Chamber located on River Nzoia, laying of new raw water gravity main of 150mm diameter GI pipe of approximately 30m long with associated fittings and masonry chamber. The works will also involve laying of new 150 mm diameter ferrous pipe for raw water delivery approximately 24m long, completion of an elevated pressed treated water steel tank of approximately 145m3 located at Milimani area in Moi’s bridge. In addition, masonry tank of 225m3 one at Kware Primary School will also be repaired under the programme. The Site is located at Moi’s Bridge and Matunda towns of Kakamega and Uasin Gishu Counties. Meanwhile, the Board has planned to construct the first conventional sewerage treatment system in the area since sewerage system in the area ever since. Currently, residents in the area rely on pit latrines for sewerage treatments.
From the findings of the survey, it is clear that the access levels of both water and sanitation have immensely improved since the LVNWSB came into existence about ten years ago, with the reforms in the water sector. The impact of the reforms has however been more evident in the urban areas of the Board where almost all the major urban centers now have a conventional water supply system. This notwithstanding, there is need to adopt effective strategies to close the gap between urban and rural areas so as to promote the socio- economic progress in the region. It is the responsibility of the Board to continue working in tandem with other sector players under the existing legal framework to ensure provision of quality and affordable water & sanitation services through effective management of resources and in turn promote socio-economic progress in the region.
